Nature Center Opens, Plymouth Activities, Camps & Condolences

Plymouth Report by Margo Marrone

I was sorry to have missed the Nature Center opening at Coolidge State Park last Saturday – sounds like it was wonderful & the weather cooperated nicely. The children & grandchildren of Bill Schreibner & his late wife, Janey were on hand for the festivities. Bill & Janey came to the park in 2000 & enjoyed constructing the log playhouse in the playground using logs harvested from the park. That helped to give rise to doing the same for a building to provide a place for nature talks. Chris Saylor (Park Ranger at Camp Plymouth), Alice Nitka (State Senator), & Nate McKeen (Chief of Park Operations) also spoke at the ceremony, fondly remembering Janey & thanking folks for contributing time, talent, & funds to make the Schreibner’s dream become a reality. VINS brought 2 hawks & an owl for a 7:00 PM presentation that drew over 80 people.

We are so fortunate to have many interesting programs & activities happening in our area. You can find books to read at Tyson Library (10:00 to noon, Tuesday – Saturday & 6:00-7:00 PM on the 1st & 3rd Monday). Enjoy time at our 2 State Parks & cool off or boat in our lakes, eat tasty food at our great restaurants (the Echo Lake Inn, the River Tavern, & Salt Ash, sit outside & listen to music on Thursday evenings at Hawk.

Over 20 people attended the Reach Out Luncheon held at Tyson Church on 7/21. Folks enjoyed hearing Willow Bascom speak about how her artist career developed. Thanks to Terry Bascom for cooking & to Laurence at the Echo Lake Inn for loaning the grill to us! The meat was provided by the church from funds raised by our raffle at the Strawberry Festival. Also thanks to the many folks who prepared baked beans & potato salad, & cookies.

There are still a few opening for the Bethany Birches teen camp (ages 14-18) for the week of Jul 31 – Aug 5, so call 674-5220 for more information. Our other camp in town, Farm & Wilderness will soon be preparing for their annual Fair from 1:00-4:00 on 8/13. It is an old-fashion gathering with good food, time to relax with old friends & make new ones, & a few hand-powered rides. It also provides an opportunity to learn more about their programs.

Our condolences to the family & friends of Deb Vetrano, who passed away last week in NY after a long battle with cancer. She is well remembered for her many years assisting with inn-keeping duties at the Echo Lake Inn. Her cheerful smile, boundless energy, & sense of humor ingratiated her to many of us, as she made sure that everyone was well served & comfortable. Contributions may be made in Deborah’s memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital.
