As Summer Arrives, Plymouth is Ripe with Activities! — Margo’s Plymouth Report

5/22/16

With the warmer weather things are budding and not just the trees!  So much going on that I barely know where to start and I fear I will be leaving out some events and organizations.  If I do, please let me know, so I can remedy the situation.

After church on Sunday Tom and I took items over to the Community Center for the Town-wide Antiques and Treasures Sale that will take place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  One of the 8 foot church benches that are for sale will be there on display.  Make sure to check it out – you might find something you didn’t know you need!

The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site opens for the 2016 season on Saturday, 5/28, with a new temporary exhibit –Expressions of Esteem: The Coolidge Presidential Gifts.  Many objects have never been on display and are on loan from the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum in Northampton, Massachusetts.  Be on alert, however, because the Killington Stage Race will mean many cyclists speeding through the area!   Also, Bill Jenney (672-3773) tells me that they are seeking seasonal employees to be tour guides for this summer and fall, so if you enjoy working with the public, give him a call.

Many venues are opening for the season, including Wilder House, where you can have breakfast or lunch right there in the Notch.  For your reading pleasure, Tyson Library (one of the smallest and oldest in Vermont) will also open 5/28 with a book sale.   It is located on Library Trail, off Dublin Rd – behind Tyson Church.  Hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM to noon and the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 6 -7 PM.

Also, the Historical Society Museum will now be open on Saturdays from 12-2 PM throughout the summer or by making an appointment by calling 802-438-8351.  Please note the correct date for the Irene documentary is Saturday, 8/27 at 7 PM at the Coolidge Historic Site.

The first of the 2016 Grace Coolidge Musicales in the Great Room [at the Coolidge Education Center] will be Sunday, May 29 at 4:00 PM.  The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.  This concert will feature “Songs from the Home Front,” with Abigail Charbeneau (piano) and Ellen Nordstrom (mezzo-soprano), as a patriotic and cultural tribute to our veterans and their loved ones.  Refreshments follow at the Wilder House Restaurant.

Join together with other volunteers on 5/28 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM for the Spring Work Day at Bethany Birches Camp in order to turn the pavilion from a construction zone into an exciting summer camp!  Various skill levels are needed and lunch will be provided.  Lodging is available here at the camp for anyone who wants to come from a distance or make a weekend of it!   You can email amber@bethanybirches to let them know you plan to help.  Be sure to go to the website for information on the camping programs and note that there will be several sessions of day camp this year, too!

Both of our State Parks in town will be opening on Friday, 5/27.  Mark your calendars for the Annual Plymouth Strawberry Festival that takes place at Camp Plymouth on Wednesday, 6/22.  Emergency Services does the BBQ, Tyson Ladies Aid does the strawberry shortcake, and Tyson Church does the raffle.  Some donations for the raffle from local businesses and individuals have already been given and others are currently being solicited, so that the prize list will be extensive again this year!   All proceeds go into our Community Outreach Fund to meet various needs in our area, such as:  food for the monthly Reach Out Luncheon, camp scholarships, gas cards for medical travel, help with fuel and utilities, etc.
